The small details that determine whether your system works offshore

De små detaljer, der afgør om dit system virker offshore

When looking at modern marine electronics, it is often the large components such as chartplotters, instruments, and sensors that capture attention. However, in reality, it is often the small details in the installation that determine whether the system functions flawlessly after 10 hours or 10,000 nautical miles.

The image shows an example of a correctly executed connection with service loops on individual conductors. While it may seem like a small detail, it is a technique that can save time, money, and frustrations later on.

Service loops provide flexibility

By leaving a small reserve on the conductors inside the connector, it becomes possible to perform repairs or reassemblies without having to replace the entire cable run.

In a maritime environment, cables are constantly exposed to vibrations, temperature changes, and movements. A correctly executed service loop reduces stress on the connection and provides extra security if service is needed later.

Heat shrink tubing is more than cosmetic

Correct heat shrink tubing protects connections from moisture, corrosion, and mechanical stress. In marine environments, saltwater is one of the biggest enemies of electronic systems, and even small amounts of moisture can eventually create unstable connections and faults that can be difficult to locate.

By using high-quality heat shrink tubing, a robust and long-lasting installation is achieved, which can withstand the challenges of life at sea.

Documentation and labeling save hours

In larger installations, there can be several hundred connections on board. Without proper labeling, troubleshooting quickly becomes both time-consuming and expensive.

Therefore, all cables and connections in our projects are labeled so that owners, technicians, and future installers can quickly understand the system's structure.

A professional installation is about details

Most electronic failures are not due to defective products, but errors in the installation. Poor connections, lack of strain relief, inadequate corrosion protection, or missing documentation are often the cause of problems on board.

At Nordic Navigation Systems, we build installations according to the same principles used on offshore racers, superyachts, and professional projects: proper cable management, correct connections, clear documentation, and solutions designed to function under demanding conditions.

Because when it comes to marine electronics, it is often the small details that make the biggest difference.
